Your World Recruitment is recruiting a Head of Midwifery to lead the operational and strategic direction of maternity services for our healthcare client’s organisation based in Surrey.

Location: Chertsey and Ashford, Surrey (cross-site role with the expectation to work at other site locations as required)

The pay rate quoted depends on skills, qualifications, and experience.

Working Days Hours: Full-Time, Monday – Friday

DBS Required: Yes - Enhanced DBS required.

Overview of role:

  • Lead the operational and strategic direction of maternity services.
  • Advise the Trust Board on midwifery practices and represent the Trust internally and externally.
  • Provide professional and operational support for midwifery, supporting the Trust’s vision.
  • Deliver excellent midwifery care, offering expert advice on practice and strategy.
  • Oversee Clinical Governance Assurance Framework, ensuring high standards of patient care and meeting quality metrics.
  • Embed Integrated Clinical Governance Assurance within the Division.
  • Integrate corporate midwifery plans with Divisional clinical service plans.
  • Develop clinical quality dashboards for targeted intervention.
  • Lead and manage Matrons, Midwife Consultants, Clinical Practice Educators, and all midwives.
  • Strengthen and optimize the role of the ward sister across the Trust.
  • Ensure compliance with NHSLA CNST Standards and CQC Registration Standards.
  • Improve and sustain patient safety, focusing on risk minimization.
  • Drive midwifery innovation, including technology and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Manage the midwifery budget, ensuring effective resource use and continuous improvement.
  • Develop a future-ready, safe workforce.
  • Contribute to corporate initiatives and participate in the midwifery on-call rota.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

Lead Clinical Governance Assurance Framework and risk management.

Represent the Trust at local, regional, and national forums.

Manage midwifery workforce, budget, and cost improvement programs.

Oversee midwifery and non-medical education and commissioning.

Build professional relationships with healthcare partners.

Collaborate with nursing and divisional leaders to provide professional leadership.

Operational Management:

Provide senior-level professional and operational advice.

Participate in on-call and trust investigations as required.

Lead corporate projects and contribute to strategic objectives.

Ensure midwifery strategy implementation and integration with divisional plans.

Conduct performance reviews and personal development planning.

Professional Leadership:

Maintain high standards of midwifery practice and professional behaviour.

Promote a positive, open culture for continuous improvement.

Manage midwifery staff and budgets, ensuring effective resource use.

Lead patient and public engagement and experience initiatives.

Standards of Care:

Ensure compliance with CQC standards and national guidelines.

Implement quality improvement, innovation, and use of technology.

Lead infection control, cleanliness, and patient safety initiatives.

Monitor and respond to complaints and incidents.

Financial Management:

Partner with divisional leaders to manage budgets and cost improvement.

Identify and deliver productivity benefits and cost-effective services.

Service Delivery:

Lead midwifery strategy and workforce planning.

Ensure service delivery meets local and national standards.

Develop roles and workforce plans to enhance patient experience.

Collaborate with healthcare partners to improve service delivery.

Engagement and Experience:

Represent the Trust and engage with service users.

Lead initiatives to improve patient and staff experience.

Implement and monitor patient experience agendas and lessons learned.

Additional Responsibilities:

Deputise for the Deputy Chief Nurse as needed.

Participate in senior nurse forums and corporate initiatives.

Experience:

Prior Senior Midwifery experience (Grade 8B, equivalent or above) in an acute setting

Experience leading clinical teams, managing budgets, and governance of maternity services

Experience in improving patient experience and public engagement

Experience developing business cases and managing complex incidents

Qualifications:

NMC Registered Midwife (RM)

Diploma-level management qualification

BSc in Healthcare or equivalent

Mentorship/ENB 998 or equivalent

Master's Degree or equivalent experience
