Support Worker for a child

Part-time and full-time hours

Our client is seeking a Support Worker to join their new team. The ideal candidate will have a good sense of humour and a can-do attitude. They must have an excellent work ethic and a passion to support the client in living as full a life as possible. External support and professional development will be provided, and this is an ideal job for someone wishing to further develop their skills.

The right candidate will be sensitive to the factors that need to be considered when working with a client in the home he shares with his family.

The Client

The client is an 11-year-old male who has Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Crohn’s. Once he has built a positive relationship with you, he can be a very sociable person. He enjoys listening to music, loves Sonic the hedgehog and also likes to play football.

The client is able to communicate verbally. His ability to express his wishes and what he is thinking becomes greater if he is comfortable in his environment and with the people he is talking to. He needs to feel confident in his surroundings. He likes a plan and it is important to him to know what is happening in his day and week. Routine and predictability are also very important to him.

The client benefits from therapy goals and outcomes that he will need support to practice and develop to enable him to thrive in his education, social and home life. He likes to use the sensory room in his home.

He is in his final term of primary school and will be transitioning into secondary school in September.

The Role

The client requires one-to-one care. You must be attentive and proactive in order to ensure that his routines, environment and communication needs are followed as required. The role requires a commitment to providing a professional high level of care.

You will be expected to follow guidance from the client's parents and work closely with other Support Workers, therapists, education staff, medical professionals, and the Case Manager to ensure that the client's needs are suitably met.

Day to day tasks will include providing the client with support in meeting his personal care needs, getting him ready for school and community activities, supporting the client with his therapy exercises and daily living needs. Whilst his parents currently support him with taking his medication, the aim would be for you to provide the necessary assistance with this in the near future. Once he has started secondary education, you will be required to do the school drop-off and pick-up.

Essential

● You must have skills and experience gained from working a young person who has complex needs, both physical and cognitive.

● You must be physically active and capable of assisting the client with managing his needs, engaging in therapy, and accessing social activities.

● Good communication skills, written and verbal, and have excellent time keeping.

● Fluent in English, capable of reading and following written guidance provided by professionals.

● Be comfortable working as part of a team aimed at encouraging the young person's growth and development.

● Flexibility is vital. Regular shifts will be agreed but the employer has the right to change shifts to suit the client's needs. You may also need to stay later than the expected finish time to help the client complete his routines on time.

● The ability to work during the school holidays is essential.

● Satisfactory Enhanced DBS check.

● Clean driving licence and be capable of driving the client's vehicle.
