We are seeking a motivated Band 4 Associate Practitioner to join our Histology Department on a fixed-term contract for 6 months. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art laboratory environment and play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Pathology First provides essential and efficient uninterrupted laboratory services to two hospitals, and community-based health services, in South Essex. This is done through Essential Services Laboratories (ESLs) located in Southend University Hospital and Basildon University Hospital, and a central hub laboratory on the outskirts of Basildon.

You will be responsible for assisting in the processing and preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination. Working under the guidance of experienced histologists. Full training and support to develop technical competencies will be provided. For Internal candidates this would be a unique secondment opportunity for an MLA to gain valuable experience and skills in an AP role. 

Key roles and duties:

  • To perform routine biomedical investigations and participate in the daily scientific and technical activities of the laboratory section in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists.
  • To rotate through a range of specialist areas of the laboratory which may include Microtomy, Embedding, Immunohistochemistry, sample transfer, RCPATH scoring and allocation.
  • To participate in cross-site working
  • To participate and undertake training and competency completion with personal development as appropriate.
  • To be proficient in the use of laboratory computer applications in use such as LIMS, Quality Management System and stock control system.
  • To communicate with a wide range of levels of staff within the laboratory and user organisation in a respectful and professional manner.
  • To maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety and laboratory regulations.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Science or Biology based Foundation Degree or Equivalent Qualification
  • Previous experience working in a histology laboratory
