We have an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Manager to ensure the smooth running of a large animal facility in a leading research establishment. You will play a vital part in supervising a team of technicians, managing the daily organisation of staff and research activities, as well as maintaining a high standard of animal care and ensuring that staff are well-trained in all necessary procedures.

Additionally, you will also be responsible for stepping in and taking charge in the absence of the manager, ensuring that everything continues to operate smoothly. You will act as NACWO for the facility and be the first point of contact for animal technicians, service staff, and research users.

Basic Requirements:

  • IAT Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience
  • Home Office Personal Licence holder A-C previously 1-4 
  • NACWO qualification is desirable, but training will be provided on appointment
  • Previous experience working with livestock and other farm animals (sheep, pigs, chickens) -desirable
  • Supervisory experience, including experience training and motivating staff
  • Familiarity with Health and Safety, COSHH risk assessment, and animal allergy policies.
  • Experience working under GLP would be desirable

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organisation and supervision of staff
  • NACWO with responsibility under ASPA for the day-to-day care of animals
  • Training and competency assessments of technical and research staff
  • Assist the Facility Manager in the development and implementation of SOPs and safe working practices
  • Care of experimental animals and assist with animal husbandry schedules
  • Monitor the health status of all animals
  • Deal with issues and non-compliance concerns
  • Undertaking Home Office licenced procedures including some surgical techniques
  • Provide non-sterile assistance for surgical techniques
  • Monitor stock levels and ensure sufficient stock levels of animals and consumables
  • Deputise for the Facility Manager in their absence.
