Andy File Associates Limited is working as a Recruitment Agency on behalf of our client with regards this permanent position of Metallographic Technician

Our client is one of Britain’s leading independent aerospace and industrial forgers. Their unique feature is the combination of open and closed-die forging while also undertaking the whole production process from raw material to the finished product in one location. Operating from a 680 000ft2 facility in Sheffield, they manufacture high-integrity, open-die and closed-die forged components in nickel alloy, titanium, stainless steel and carbon alloys for customers and tier-one suppliers within the aerospace, nuclear, power generation, marine.

Main Purpose of the Role

To study the physical microstructure of metals and alloys, often via microscopy. Analysing for understanding the mechanical properties of materials, including grain size, crystal structure, and the presence of any defects such as cracks or non-metallic inclusions. Metallography plays a crucial role in the business.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Interpret requirements from work route cards/test instruction paperwork.
  • Metallographic specimen selection, preparation, and etching.
  • Perform macrographic and micrographic examinations to the relevant standards.
  • Prepare, handle, and dispose of chemicals/solutions ensuring that all work is done in line with Health and safety and quality standards.
  • Assist in failure and non-conformance investigations.
  • Complete reports and other information as required for data interpretation.
  • Control the archiving of metallographic test samples.

Skills and Experience

  • Educated either to A level standard in a science-based subject or equivalent
  • Experience in a laboratory environment
  • A good working knowledge in the application and function of microscopy and metallography
  • ISO/IEC 17025

A degree in materials science or a relevant engineering subject would be desirable,
