We are recruiting for a Senior Animal Technician to work in our client’s Surgical Training and Research facilities.

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Business Development Manager and Senior Study Director and will also act as NACWO and NTCO.

You will help new users as well as provide animal care and welfare within their department of biomedical services. The ideal candidate will need to support the team, communicate well with researchers and be confident to delegate tasks.

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge of ASP.
  • Experience in the responsibilities of NACWO.
  • Previous experience of working with large animals.
  • Hold an IAT level 2 or 3 certificate.
  • Hold a Home Office Personal Licence  with procedural experience.
  • Good communication and written skills.
  • Good teamwork skills.
  • Able to work on own initiative.
  • Knowledge of NTCO role is desirable.
  • Working in a GLP facility is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To supervise other animal technicians to ensure BSU meets work requirements
  • To liaise with farms and order/prepare animals for research and training procedures.
  • Work closely with NVS.
  • Ensure unit facilities are purchased and maintained withing the TGI policies and relevant legislation.
  • To implement the 3R policy and GLP standard.
  • Attend AWERB meetings and meeting with clients to offer advice on animal welfare.
  • Costing, verifying and authorising purchasing and invoice payments and maintaining filing systems for all orders and invoices for BSU equipment, animals and consumables purchased.
  • Ensure the monitoring of room temperatures and humidity is in accordance with the code of practice.
  • Oversee cleaning of animal rooms and related areas including cage wash duties.
  • Compliance with GLP/non GLP for studies and general work.
  • Compliance and writing and reviewing of SOPs.
  • Assisting with surgical preparations and procedures on animals.
  • General upkeep and preparation of theatres.
  • Weekend work to facilitate courses and research studies
  • Performing post-mortems and collecting tissue samples for histology and other departments.
  • Performing schedule 1 procedures and generic disposal of animal cadavers.
